  • @gram_bot #187 b o t 05:54 AM, 09 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi_ inscript layouts have very small keys in mobile.
  • @gram_bot #188 b o t 05:54 AM, 09 Jun 2016
jishnu7: they will be comparatively difficult to type
  • @gram_bot #189 b o t 05:55 AM, 09 Jun 2016
jishnu7: since this one can fit in smaller layout,
  • @gram_bot #190 b o t 05:55 AM, 09 Jun 2016
    jishnu7: we should use that.
  • @gram_bot #191 b o t 05:55 AM, 09 Jun 2016

  • @gram_bot #193 b o t 05:56 AM, 09 Jun 2016

  • @gram_bot #196 b o t 05:57 AM, 09 Jun 2016

arushi_: jishnu7, i am confused on how I should proceed
  • @gram_bot #198 b o t 06:05 AM, 09 Jun 2016

    arushi_: additional to what?
  • @gram_bot #200 b o t 06:06 AM, 09 Jun 2016

  • @gram_bot #266 b o t 05:10 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, explain. I would like to know what you understood.
  • @gram_bot #267 b o t 05:11 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: so that we don't need to spend time again on this layout.
  • @gram_bot #268 b o t 05:12 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: I am including pcqwerty layout file in the keyboard
  • @gram_bot #269 b o t 05:12 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: whereas i should be including the other layout file
  • @gram_bot #270 b o t 05:13 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, how many rows should be there?
  • @gram_bot #271 b o t 05:13 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: or what is the difference between pc-qwerty and normal layout?
  • @gram_bot #272 b o t 05:17 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: In pc-qwerty , one can switch between keys
  • @gram_bot #273 b o t 05:17 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    arushi: depending on the settings
  • @gram_bot #274 b o t 05:17 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: that was what i understood from the code
  • @gram_bot #275 b o t 05:18 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    jishnu7: arushi, no.
  • @gram_bot #276 b o t 05:18 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: whereas in row_qwerty layout ( which I should have included) , just the layout of the keys is defined
  • @gram_bot #277 b o t 05:19 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    jishnu7: arushi, let me explain
  • @gram_bot #278 b o t 05:20 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: pc-qwerty is like desktop keyboard. 4+1 rows.
  • @gram_bot #279 b o t 05:20 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    jishnu7: a mobile layout has 3+1 rows
  • @gram_bot #280 b o t 05:21 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: mobile layout is more comfortable to type in mobile. button will be larget
  • @gram_bot #281 b o t 05:22 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    jishnu7: large
  • @gram_bot #282 b o t 05:22 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: in pc-qwerty layout, we are trying to include all keys. so buttons are smaller.
  • @gram_bot #283 b o t 05:23 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: it wont be comfortable to type in small displays
  • @gram_bot #284 b o t 05:24 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    arushi: jishnu7, i have 4 rows
  • @gram_bot #285 b o t 05:24 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    arushi: for the mobile layout
  • @gram_bot #286 b o t 05:24 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    jishnu7: arushi, which language/layout?
  • @gram_bot #287 b o t 05:24 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    arushi: santali olchiki
  • @gram_bot #288 b o t 05:25 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    jishnu7: arushi, yes.
  • @gram_bot #289 b o t 05:27 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: difference between pcqwerty and mobile are not just rows, number of columns/characters in each rows also differs. former having letters+symbols, and latter is hiding then in a different layer which you can open by pressing the button below shift
  • @gram_bot #290 b o t 05:28 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: I asked you to test other layouts on your device because, I guessed this must be an obvious observation.
  • @gram_bot #291 b o t 05:29 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    arushi: I missed this

jishnu7: now, can you tell me why I asked you to use mobile layout for santali? arushi
  • @gram_bot #293 b o t 05:31 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: because it can fit in smaller layout
  • @gram_bot #294 b o t 05:32 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: inscript is difficult to type as it has smaller keys and hence difficult to type
  • @gram_bot #295 b o t 05:35 PM, 11 Jun 2016
    jishnu7: yes. :)
  • @gram_bot #296 b o t 05:36 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: I have one more doubt
  • @gram_bot #297 b o t 05:36 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: since mobile layout has 3+1 rows
  • @gram_bot #298 b o t 05:37 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: so i should make 3 rows files
  • @gram_bot #299 b o t 05:37 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: And since I followed the inscript layout structure
  • @gram_bot #300 b o t 05:37 PM, 11 Jun 2016
arushi: i should change the structure of my layout now?
  • @gram_bot #301 b o t 05:41 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, there is only small difference between those files. you should be able to re-use your files with minor changes
  • @gram_bot #302 b o t 05:44 PM, 11 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, pro tip: I'm pretty sure you haven't noticed it yet. Indic Keyboard has another submodule named tools-indic. It points to https://github.com/androidtweak/Indic-Keyboard-tools/. If you run layout.sh of that repo, it will create all the necessary files for the new layout. It works or both inscript and normal layouts

    arushi: yes, 1 min
  • @gram_bot #347 b o t 09:35 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: I tried keyboards punjabi, telugu and hindi
  • @gram_bot #348 b o t 09:36 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: gurmukhi keyboard which is most used was not working on my version and neither on Android version 6.x
  • @gram_bot #349 b o t 09:36 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: as it didnt have the fonts
  • @gram_bot #350 b o t 09:36 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: the other keyboards(punjabi) were very slow or not working
  • @gram_bot #351 b o t 09:37 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: most of them are transliteration
  • @gram_bot #352 b o t 09:37 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: how was the user on boarding in all those apps? arushi
  • @gram_bot #353 b o t 09:38 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: They were similar to our Indic Keyboard
  • @gram_bot #354 b o t 09:39 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: Swiftkey keyboard was different though
  • @gram_bot #355 b o t 09:39 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: I was also thinking if instead of list
  • @gram_bot #356 b o t 09:39 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: we could create a drop down
  • @gram_bot #357 b o t 09:40 AM, 17 Jun 2016
    arushi: for languages
  • @gram_bot #358 b o t 09:40 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: because otherwise the list become too big
  • @gram_bot #359 b o t 09:41 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: so we can write malayalam and in the dropdown give the categories of layouts under it
  • @gram_bot #360 b o t 09:41 AM, 17 Jun 2016
    arushi: Its more systematic then
  • @gram_bot #361 b o t 09:47 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: I tried a variety of keybaords in many local languages
  • @gram_bot #362 b o t 09:47 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: most of them either dont work, or are too slow.
  • @gram_bot #363 b o t 09:47 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: The user on boarding is same for almost all of them
  • @gram_bot #364 b o t 09:48 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: Enable and select the keybaords
  • @gram_bot #365 b o t 09:49 AM, 17 Jun 2016
    arushi: jishnu7, ping
  • @gram_bot #366 b o t 09:49 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, giving categories of the layout will confuse users

    arushi: yes i did
  • @gram_bot #369 b o t 09:50 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: I was previously using this keyboard
  • @gram_bot #370 b o t 09:53 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: it has transliteration input methods
  • @gram_bot #371 b o t 10:00 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: jishnu7, by categories i mean
  • @gram_bot #372 b o t 10:00 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: there are 5 layouts for malayalam
  • @gram_bot #373 b o t 10:00 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: so we can just write malayalam input method from which the user can choose the layout he wants
  • @gram_bot #374 b o t 10:01 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, how was the user on boarding there?
  • @gram_bot #375 b o t 10:20 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: Auto space insertion is there
  • @gram_bot #376 b o t 10:20 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: keyboard height can be adjusted
  • @gram_bot #377 b o t 10:22 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: Also, there is a feedback kind of option
  • @gram_bot #378 b o t 10:22 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: send usage statistics and help improve handwriting
  • @gram_bot #379 b o t 10:23 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: for the dictionaries, there is an option to send them
  • @gram_bot #380 b o t 10:23 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: that might be helpful in the autocorrect
  • @balasankarc #381 10:24 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi, jishnu7 : Do we have an option to import existing dictionary? Like, a list of words?
  • @gram_bot #382 b o t 10:25 AM, 17 Jun 2016
    jishnu7: arushi, I wasn't asking about features.
  • @gram_bot #383 b o t 10:25 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, my question is specific to user on boarding / first time user experience / tutorials
  • @gram_bot #384 b o t 10:26 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: grambot, balasankarc as of now, we don't have it. but if you have a set of data, please send a PR to the dictionary project.
  • @gram_bot #385 b o t 10:26 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: grambot, balasankarc at the same time, when you write text and add it to your personal dictionary.
  • @gram_bot #386 b o t 10:30 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, aka setup wizard. hope you noted it in all those apps. if you haven't you should look at google indic keyboard again.
  • @gram_bot #387 b o t 10:31 AM, 17 Jun 2016
bsc: jishnu7, [probably privacy abusing content follows] If we had a way for users to share their dictionaries, to improve performance, we could easily get the words users often use.
  • @gram_bot #388 b o t 10:31 AM, 17 Jun 2016
bsc: jishnu7, like Firefox collecting data.
  • @gram_bot #389 b o t 10:31 AM, 17 Jun 2016
bsc: jishnu7, And I understand, it can create a lot of confusion/issues when proposed. :D
  • @gram_bot #390 b o t 10:34 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: bsc, mm. idea is good.
  • @gram_bot #391 b o t 10:47 AM, 17 Jun 2016
    arushi: jishnu7,
  • @gram_bot #392 b o t 10:47 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: 3. Also it is not only giving the letters but also other combinations which otherwise take a long time to type . For example in hindi the keyboard has 5 rows and 3 pages.
  • @gram_bot #393 b o t 10:47 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: 1. After the setup wizard and choosing the input languages . In Indic keyboard the app is closed. Whereas in Google Indic keyboard , the user is tranferred to the settings .. which is good as many of the setting are set in default so the users should be able to see them in the first launch.
  • @gram_bot #394 b o t 10:47 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: 2. Google Indic keybaord tells if a language is not supported.
  • @gram_bot #395 b o t 10:51 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: In the swift key startup wizard, It asks for permission to read messages during the setup
  • @gram_bot #396 b o t 10:52 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: so that it can create a dictionary for autocorrect
  • @gram_bot #397 b o t 10:52 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: that is a good idea too
  • @gram_bot #398 b o t 10:53 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: Then it provides variety of themes and keyboard sizes during the setup
  • @gram_bot #399 b o t 10:57 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: I really liked the idea of generating stats
  • @gram_bot #400 b o t 10:59 AM, 17 Jun 2016
    arushi: jishnu7, there?
  • @gram_bot #401 b o t 11:02 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, We should detect whether a language is supported or not. May be that can be your first task.
  • @gram_bot #402 b o t 11:02 AM, 17 Jun 2016
    arushi: Yes.
  • @gram_bot #403 b o t 11:03 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: on the set up wizard,
  • @gram_bot #404 b o t 11:04 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: I should display it on the setup wizard before the user chooses right?
  • @gram_bot #405 b o t 11:06 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: I will work on it .
  • @gram_bot #406 b o t 11:06 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: And report back to you tomorrow about the progress
  • @gram_bot #407 b o t 11:13 AM, 17 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, how will you detect whether a language is supported or not?
  • @gram_bot #408 b o t 11:18 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: yes, i am thinking about that
  • @gram_bot #409 b o t 11:18 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: because if a language is not supported
  • @gram_bot #410 b o t 11:18 AM, 17 Jun 2016
    arushi: when one types it
  • @gram_bot #411 b o t 11:19 AM, 17 Jun 2016
    arushi: nothing is displayed
  • @gram_bot #412 b o t 11:19 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: that can be one of the option
  • @gram_bot #413 b o t 11:19 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: we can check that if nothing is being displayed, the language is not supported
  • @gram_bot #415 b o t 11:23 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: This is how google indic tells
  • @gram_bot #416 b o t 11:23 AM, 17 Jun 2016
arushi: as soon as the keyboard is opened
  • @gram_bot #417 b o t 11:27 AM, 17 Jun 2016

  • @gram_bot #447 b o t 11:27 AM, 20 Jun 2016
    arushi: i check the bitmap
  • @gram_bot #448 b o t 11:28 AM, 20 Jun 2016
arushi: and if it is empty
  • @gram_bot #449 b o t 11:28 AM, 20 Jun 2016
arushi: i declare it as not supported
  • @gram_bot #450 b o t 11:29 AM, 20 Jun 2016
arushi: jishnu7, i will send you the screenshots in some time
  • @gram_bot #451 b o t 11:32 AM, 20 Jun 2016
jishnu7: arushi, If it won't create a lot of load, we should detect it on setup wizard
  • @gram_bot #452 b o t 11:33 AM, 20 Jun 2016
arushi: jishnu7, i was thinking that too
  • @gram_bot #453 b o t 11:33 AM, 20 Jun 2016
arushi: it makes more sense then
  • @gram_bot #454 b o t 11:36 AM, 20 Jun 2016
arushi: So I just need to display during startup wizard?
  • @gram_bot #455 b o t 11:36 AM, 20 Jun 2016
    arushi: *setup

arushi: I am done with the point that if I open the keyboard it tells whether the language is supported or not( like it is there in Google Indic Keybaord)
  • @gram_bot #461 b o t 02:58 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: But I want to do it that it just check once during the setup
  • @gram_bot #462 b o t 02:59 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: so i am figuring that out.
  • @gram_bot #463 b o t 03:00 PM, 25 Jun 2016

jishnu7_: arushi, how are you checking whether a language is supported or not?
  • @gram_bot #476 b o t 03:37 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: hey arushi can you see my messages?
  • @gram_bot #477 b o t 03:42 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: jishnu7_ , i just received your message
  • @gram_bot #478 b o t 03:42 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: yes i am testing using bitmaps
  • @gram_bot #479 b o t 03:42 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: i am creating the bitmaps for the character
  • @gram_bot #480 b o t 03:42 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: if it is not supported its bitmap is empty
  • @gram_bot #481 b o t 03:43 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: so i am comparing the bitmap with empty bitmap
  • @gram_bot #482 b o t 03:44 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: arushi, manufacturers some times pack different fonts. will that be an issue with this approach?
  • @gram_bot #483 b o t 03:44 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: I tested it with 2 different languages
  • @gram_bot #484 b o t 03:44 PM, 25 Jun 2016
    arushi: its working fine
  • @gram_bot #485 b o t 03:45 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: arushi, I'm asking about fonts
  • @gram_bot #486 b o t 03:45 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: arushi, and how are you handling tofu?
  • @gram_bot #487 b o t 03:46 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: if a character/language shows tofu instead of empty bitmap. will this check fail?
  • @gram_bot #488 b o t 03:47 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: i am comparing with empty bitmaps
  • @gram_bot #489 b o t 03:47 PM, 25 Jun 2016
    arushi: so it will
  • @gram_bot #490 b o t 03:48 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: got that. what about tofu?
  • @gram_bot #491 b o t 03:51 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: Yes, After reading about bitmaps. If a font is not supported by the machine , it will return empty bitmap
  • @gram_bot #492 b o t 03:53 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: I tested on different versions too to check if at all it is returning tofu value , it was not
  • @gram_bot #493 b o t 03:54 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: So I check on the basis of font
  • @gram_bot #494 b o t 03:55 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: So that wont be a problem
  • @gram_bot #495 b o t 04:03 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: as bitmap will be font specific
  • @gram_bot #496 b o t 04:07 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: arushi, there will be tofus
  • @gram_bot #497 b o t 04:08 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: arushi, have a look at the second slice in this https://speakerdeck.com/jishnu7/droidcon-india-2015-android-and-indic-languages

    jishnu7_: s/slice/slide
  • @gram_bot #499 b o t 04:16 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: arushi, my suggestion is to integrate into the setup wizard. for now we can have a screen there. you can list all the unsupported languages and warn user saying that these languages may not work for their device
  • @gram_bot #500 b o t 04:16 PM, 25 Jun 2016
    arushi: using bitmaps?
  • @gram_bot #501 b o t 04:17 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: arushi, no need to check all characters of the languages you can decide on a single character per languages and check that
  • @gram_bot #502 b o t 04:17 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: yes i am doing that now..
  • @gram_bot #503 b o t 04:17 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: arushi, this is not the ideal solution. this won't detect rendering issue. but still it is better than nothing.
  • @gram_bot #504 b o t 04:19 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: also,I aw a keybaord in which there was an option to download the font if not supported.. we can keep that as an option
  • @gram_bot #505 b o t 04:19 PM, 25 Jun 2016
arushi: yes , i will do that
  • @gram_bot #506 b o t 04:19 PM, 25 Jun 2016
jishnu7_: arushi, one thing. please don't send your code as email attachment. make use of git. create branches.even if you have temporary code, commit there. and share git commit/branch lin

    stultus looks around
  • @gram_bot #511 b o t 04:20 PM, 25 Jun 2016
